Here’s a custom Sluggonadon I finished up a few weeks ago. Way back when the client first contacted me about doing a commission, we discussed doing an 8-inch Dunny or something more standard. But when it finally came time for me to start on this, he asked me if I wanted to try painting a Sluggonadon- one of Joe Ledbetter’s toys from the Kaiju for Grownups series. I’m usually up for painting on new things, so I said sure. I was a little leery because my style tends to work best on very blobby toys without much detail, but since I had just finished up a couple of Super 7 Squirm customs I thought this might be very similar. An added twist was that the piece he had for me was glow-in-the-dark, so I was going to have to figure out a cool way to incorporate the base GID vinyl. The client also wanted me to incorporate the color purple, so I had a few challenges to deal with right up front. Going with just purple and GID would make this piece too similar to the GID Squirm I painted, so I added in a blue secondary color and finally added in black detail. I think the combination of all the different colors with the GID base really made this piece one of my favorites I’ve worked on this year.
